Pacers Beat the Nets Again?

Posted by Pacers Boy On November - 13 - 2008

Here is a good test for the Pacers: consistency. Can we beat the New Jersey Nets with a good defensive effort like we did a week ago? Time, and four quarters, will only tell. Rasho is back, but Murphy stayed home in Indy with the stomach flu. Brandon Rush starts the game for the Pacers with a nice three. We need him to step up with Murphy gone and Granger possibly hurt. The Pacers were up 11 - 4 with four minutes gone from the first quarter, but two consecutive turnovers gave the Nets some easy points.

With Marquis in his face, Vince Carter hit a huge three to tie it at 11 - 11. New Jersey took a time out with 4:42 in the 1st and the Pacers ahead 17 - 14. Stephen Graham is alive and on the court sports fans. Ford took it inside with 2 minutes left and it was sweet. McRoberts and Diener came in, with T.J., Jack and Stephen Graham rounding out the never seen before lineup. They picked it up quick with an offensive rebound by McRoberts, nice passes from Diener and Jack, and a big three from Graham. Roy Hibbert has a big block and heck, all the guys are looking good. Hayes hits a long two at the buzzer to close the quarter 28 - 24. Seven Pacers scored in the first quarter and we saw a lot of different lineups and player rotations. They shot 65% and were 13 for 20 with 10 assists.

The 2nd quarter starts out with some nice passing from the Pacers, and Travis and Marquis are playing well together. However, Daniels may want to focus more on improving his passing skills rather than his three pointer. He should definitely pass more than shoot threes! Jarret Jack had an amazing layup that got  Indiana up 40 - 32 with six minutes to go. T.J. Ford gets a super quick layup, and then drives with another layup and gets the foul. Ford has 13 points with 4:25 left in the first half. Jack makes a nice drive on Vince Carter and adds another foul to Vince’s stats, bringing the Pacers up 50 - 36 with 2:46 left. New Jersey’s zone defense caused a couple turnovers and the Nets cut the lead in half with a 7-0 run. Vince Carter has 17 points, with a quick six in two minutes, and the Pacers call a time out. At the half, Pacers are up 50 - 43 with 50% shooting and no Danny Granger, Troy Murphy or Mike Dunleavey. The interesting Pacers team stats are 14 points off turnovers versus New Jersey’s 2, and 26 points in the paint versus the Net’s 12.

The Nets are now on a 10-0 run starting the 3rd quarter, with another three to close the lead. But, Marquis came back with a sweet reverse layup, Rasho had a steal, Jack got a foul and Rasho had a nice shot . . . and then Marquis tops it off with another missed three. The Pacers are playing great energetic defense. The Pacers are up 58 - 48 with 8 minutes left, but New Jersey used a really cool “losing sound” from The Price is Right when we missed a shot. Daniels made up for it with a nice drive and basket, and Ford stole the ball and made an easy layup . . . and then another Pacers steal with Foster getting the foul, but not the shot. 62 - 48 and Foster has 8 points and 3 assists. The Pacers are trying to keep the tempo up against the zone, but the Nets have already scored 6 with 4 minutes left - BUT THEN GRAHAM HITS ANOTHER THREE! Another block by Hibbert, but then he walks a millisecond before he made a basket. With some nice energy, but lots of missed shots, the 3rd quarter ends with the Pacers up 69 - 59.

Travis Diener hits a super running three to start the 4th quarter. Graham then goes inside and draws the foul, Stephen has been big tonight and has 10 points. Hibbert makes a nice big man bounce pass to fellow big man Foster for two. Indiana led by sixteen, but the lead has slowly dwindled to nine. The Pacers turned it over, the Nets scored, the Pacers didn’t, and the Nets have scored 7 straight points with 7 minutes to play and only a 5 point lead. Jack hits a big three to bring the score up to 79 -71 and got the next rebound. Serious passing ends with a sweet diagonal pass from McRoberts to Daniels for another quick two. Another drive into the paint by Daniels gets two, but then he froze on Carter for his rebuttal. Foster gets a rebound from Rasho’s air ball and gets the basket plus one. Jeff is a scoring machine tonight and is smiling about it. Carter answers with a huge three and the lead is 8 with 2 and a half to go. T.J. makes a super pass to Rasho who hits the jump shot and has 10, with a Pacers lead of 10. Foster had his 7th rebound on an offensive play and then scores another two for 15 points. Jack get a steal and the foul to basically close it out with 48 seconds left. Granger is pumped and standing up although he has a “thigh cramp.” With a solid defense and a well rounded offense, your Indiana Pacers again beat the New Jersey Nets 98 - 87 with JOB yelling ’till the last second.

Everyone contributed big time tonight. The defense held the New Jersey Nets to 87 points this time around. As Clark said, “The TEAM is the player of the game tonight.” What more can you say? The Pacers are over 500 (the first time since December of 2007) without our top two scorers and the improved Murphy, and consistency still prevailed. Someone pinch me.
