Pacers Up By 26 Lose to Sixers by Two

Posted by Pacers Boy On November - 15 - 2008

Your Indiana Pacers started the game against the Philadelphia 76ers on fire. They had a 9-0 lead and Granger ended up hitting 3 threes in the first quarter. But, Hibbert also got another quick three fouls. I’d rather have a quick three pointer from the big man, but Daniels is doing that tonight unbelievably. The excitement is high as the Pacers ended the first quarter up 38 to 13. Arguably the best first quarter by the Pacers this season.

But just like dreams can quickly fade, so can the Pacers in the second quarter. Philly went on a 9-0 run and the score was eventually 47-32. We were seeing a small lineup from the Sixers, and a slow defensive transition from the Pacers, which helped cut the lead in half. At the end of the second quarter it was 59-47, and Marquis and Granger both had 13.

The second half started out with Murphy and a good lookin’ three, and a whole lot prettier that his first two attempts. The lead went from 26 to 5 and the Sixers are hitting a lot of threes. Pacers are just standing there, not passing the ball, and not driving to the basket. Both Murphy and Foster get their fourth foul in the third quarter, with Hibbert already getting three in the first. The big men are having a hard time against the small and long line-up of the 76ers anyways, but Foster is producing as usual.

The fourth quarter is more of the same, but Granger has a super blocked shot on 33 and flexes his muscle for the crowd that is back in the game, after a super crazy lead in the first quarter. Up by only three points with five minutes left to play, T.J. hustles and busts himself up against two Sixers and gets the turnover. The small Sixers line-up is getting inside and the Pacers aren’t blocking out. At this point, Foster has a double double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, which is his fourth straight double double game. Brand, Young and Miller are getting on fire with the lead down to one, and Andre Miller gets a layup off a miss by Daniels and the Sixers are up by two with 2:47 left in the game. Two minutes left, with a four point lead by the Sixers who were down by 26, and the Sixers have the ball but miss. Granger hits a long two just inside the arc to cut Philadelphia’s lead to two with 43 seconds left in the game. With only eight seconds left, Jarrett Jack took it inside and should have laid it up as he was open and right under the basket, but passed it to Daniels of all people who of course missed the three. Jack could have tied the game and went to overtime. Coulda, woulda, shoulda. Up by 26 in the first quarter, losing by two is a very disappointing end to this 94-92 game.

What the heck happened to the Pacers and their 26 point lead in the 1st quarter? We can blame it on a lot of things, but here’s a few.

  • The Pacers had 38 points in the first quarter, but only 31 in the second half.
  • Indiana had 16 assists in the first half, 12 in the first quarter, but only 22 assist total in the game. For those of you in Florida, that’s only 6 assists in the second half.
  • The Pacers slowed down on offense and defense starting in the second quarter, and the Sixers picked it up big time ebarrased by the score.
  • Philadelphia is first in the league in both rebounding and fast breaks and they showed it in the second half.
  • Young had 25 points and helped the small lineup of the Sixers outplay our small lineup. Brand didn’t hurt either.
  • 18 turnovers (16 of them in the final three quarters) and 28 fouls were more than enough to let the Sixers win the game.

We can only be thankful the Pacers can try to start a new streak tomorrow night against the Bulls. This was a disappointing loss felt by all.
